In 1715, The Duke of Orleans served Champagne to courtiers in wide, shallow glasses called “Champagne coupes”. And they drank their bubbly in a single swallow – like a shot of tequila.

Somehow, the bubbles lend a certain sophistication to the wine. Which I'm sure is part of why Kings and Queens of yesteryear adored Champagne so much.
